Our Work

MISS provides a community and funded opportunities for gender minorities of color who wish to enter the field of marine and shark sciences. We fundraise and apply for grants to create paid opportunities for our members such as camps, fellowships, and collaborative research programs. All our programs are fully funded in an attempt to remove the financial barriers into marine sciences that are so often in the way of gender minorities of color pursuing a career in it.

MISS Results

Since our founding in 2020 we have raised over 2.5 million dollars which has enabled us to serve:
  • 60 campers through our free Spring Break Camp, Summer Day Camp and Summer Sleepaway Camp
  • 49 paid participants through our Diversifying Ocean Sciences Program to prepare them for the ocean workforce
  • 40 participants through our free weekend MISS Field Workshops to gain experience doing scientific fieldwork
  • Over 600 attendees through our free Science at the Sea program to connect people with the ocean and encourage environmental stewardship
  • 20 schools through our Science on the Move program connecting classrooms with the ocean
  • 55 paid MISS Fellows to complete 5-15 week experiences with us or partner institutions
  • 175 users of our free Gill Guardians online curriculum to learn about sharks and their relatives
  • Over 380 members from over 30 countries have accessed our free virtual resources, professional development workshops and networking opportunities
  • 22 researchers to work on collaborative projects to research and conserve sharks and rays
  • Thousands of people through our outreach booths, lectures and other engagements to learn about sharks and how to protect them
  • 160 members in need of travel support to present their work at scientific conferences
…And because of that:
  • 47 kids have increased their sense of belonging in science and science identity
  • 127 early career scientists have increased their science identity, sense of belonging in science and self-efficacy
  • 26 people attribute MISS as the reason they have secured jobs, grants or graduate school opportunities
  • 7 MISS-supported publications have been published in peer-reviewed journals and 1 MISS-supported academic text book has been published
  • 24 out of 30 shark scientists from the American Elasmobranch Society say that MISS has significantly increased minority participation in the field of shark science

About miss

MISS provides a community and funded opportunities for gender minorities of color who wish to enter the field of shark sciences. We aim to show that there are many gender minorities of color succeeding in and interested in this field.

We fundraise and apply for grants to create paid opportunities to attempt to knock down the financial barrier into shark sciences. We encourage other organizations in our field to do the same.
