Introducing Inclusive Coasts and Seas: Connecting Diverse Voices by MISS x SIARC, a collaboration between Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) and Project SIARC (Sharks Inspiring Action and Research with Communities) that will bring to life a virtual workshop in 2025. The workshop will focus on inclusive marine conservation, skills tutorials, networking opportunities, and provide various listening and presentation sessions.
There will be the opportunity for attendees to present their work and/or research during the workshop. Early career and established career professionals and researchers, community members and other interested parties over the age of 16 are encouraged to attend. We also strongly encourage individuals who are not members of MISS or Project SIARC but whose work aligns with the workshops goals and interests to apply.

 Workshop topics include:
  • Community science and local ecological knowledge approaches
  • Management and policy initiatives
  • Applied and theoretical biological research

 Skills tutorial topics include:
  • Qualitative methods and analyses
  • Quantitative methods and analyses
  • Fundraising and grant writing
  • Community organizing and inclusive marine conservation

*This list will be updated as more topics are added, and we would warmly welcome suggestions from workshop applicants.

The workshop is completely virtual, and funding will be available to offset financial barriers that may prevent a participant from attending, such as lost wages or childcare expenses.

We are so excited to partner with the Project SIARC team to bring this workshop together and are looking forward to listening to your research and learning from all of you in 2025!

*This workshop will be held in January or February 2025.

About miss

MISS provides a community and funded opportunities for gender minorities of color who wish to enter the field of shark sciences. We aim to show that there are many gender minorities of color succeeding in and interested in this field.

We fundraise and apply for grants to create paid opportunities to attempt to knock down the financial barrier into shark sciences. We encourage other organizations in our field to do the same.
