Our Work

MISS provides a community and funded opportunities for gender minorities of color who wish to enter the field of marine and shark sciences. We fundraise and apply for grants to create paid opportunities for our members such as camps, fellowships, and collaborative research programs. All our programs are fully funded in an attempt to remove the financial barriers into marine sciences that are so often in the way of gender minorities of color pursuing a career in it.
We have over 350 members from 30+ countries around the world participating in our community and programming.
Since 2020, we have provided over 20 fully funded fellowships to our members, supported over 40 members attending conferences, and created partnerships all around the world.

MISS Results

In an effort to quantify our successes and learn where we can do better, we were evaluated by Results 1 in 2024. Below are some key highlights!
  • MISS program participants stated that other programs/organizations do not have the same sense of community as MISS.
  • When asked to describe MISS in a few words, participants stated the “MISS is more than an organization. It is a community of caring and supportive people.”
  • When asked what was gained from participating in MISS programs, participants stated they gained employment and their experience with MISS led to the employment either directly or indirectly and obtained grants, fellowships, or other opportunities to advance their education or career.
